Beyond the clear benefits of cooling work areas, employers are legally obligated to provide hazard free working conditions as stated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).  These regulations include a properly ventilated work area.

Keeping workers cool is especially critical when operating or working near heavy machinery.  With the potential for human error to increase as temperature rises, the presence of major hazards such as industrial equipment magnify the consequences.  This combination of hot working conditions in excess of 80, 90, and even 100 degrees fahrenheit in close proximity to heavy machinery is common in iron and steel foundries, smelting facilities, brick and ceramic plants, glass production facilities, rubber product factories, boiler rooms, bakeries, commercial kitchens, food canneries, and many more.

Outdoor work environment can also pose the same risk profile.  Where hot weather or direct sun are present, so too are the risks associated with working in heated conditions.  Some examples of potentially hot outdoor working environments include farms, oil and gas sites, construction, asbestos removal, landscaping, hazardous waste sites, and even emergency response operations.

Effective cooling is an absolute necessity for hot working conditions such as these.  The physiological effects that negatively impact body function at elevated temperatures pose serious safety risks to those affected by hot environments as well as those nearby.  By properly cooling personnel and their working spaces, heat strokes and other potentially catastrophic safety-related consequences can be avoided and worker productivity will even increase!
